The first post regarding Cesenatico is about the heritage of the 20th Century and I called it the “hidden” Cesenatico. It’s really interesting what happened here: buildings and attractions reflect the history of Italy during the 20th Century.
Although that historical period wasn’t that happy, as Italy was dominated by the fascist regime, the dictator Benito Mussolini decided to make Cesenatico a touristic destination accessible also to the middle class.
During the 20s and 30s an impressive number of holiday camps, hotels and villas were built to host an important number of tourists. The most important holiday camp is represented by the ” Colonia Agip“, built in 1936-8.
During that period more than 70 holiday camps were built, by the State, by the companies that sent the employee’s children to enjoy a vacation at the sea or by the municipalities. After the 60s these buildings became unused and they are declining and could be converted into other touristic facilities.
Some of them actually are going to be restored and reconverted: potentially they could create new buildings.
Besides this, Cesenatico is really plenty of some interesting liberty villas, built during at the beginning of the 20th Century.
Hotels like the Britannia were also built during that period:
The following buildings are not “hidden”, but represent the most iconic symbols of the 20th Century: the impressive Grand Hotel Cesenatico
or the skyscraper of Cesenatico, called also Condominio Marinella II, that in 1958 it was the highest skyscraper in Italy.
The last building, along Porto Canale, is the house of the municipal Library, once called Casa del fascio, built in 1937.
All these buildings are clearly an example of the modern architecture of the 20th Century and it was really interesting to discover this part. In the next post I will talk about the historical centre of Cesenatico and its maritime traditions.
