After a long drive from Kitty Hawk and the Outer Banks we got to Savannah, in Georgia in the evening.
We found a great motel, that I will disclose in the next post, as it was really a particular and nice place where to stay, and after 10pm we started to look for a restaurant where to eat.
Â
The downtown looked like dead after 10 pm: besides the classic McDonald’s and other fast food restaurant, everything seemed to be closed. It was just a Tuesday, but in other cities we hadn’t this issue.
Â
The city is crossed by the Savannah River and has an historical centre with some city symbols. For sure the best building was the Town Hall (in the above picture).
Â
The Savannah River was part of the Slave and Cotton Trade: the slaves were imported by Western Africa. The cotton and other commodities were traded in the Old Savannah Cotton Exchange: when it was built, Savannah was the first cotton seaport of the Atlantic Coast.
Â
Savannah is still one of the most important ports in the Atlantic Coast.
and it’s nice to see also the Savannah River.
Â
Along the river you can find the main attractions of the city, from the declining historic centre with awful buildings ( but this is also intriguing as it’s known that some buildings share some paranormal activity),
Â
some statues like the Savannah’s Waving Girl
Â
the first building of the University of Georgia
Â
the US Custom House,
the Washington guns
and another WWII Memorial.
Besides the city symbols, Savannah displays also some colonial buildings
Â
and also some of the colonial buildings you could see in the movie “Gone with the wind”.
Travel tips:
- Savannah can be visited in a half a day, but I would recommend you to join some tours, like Old Savannah Tours, especially the most mysterious one, the Old Savannah Ghost Trolley, with the visit of the most haunted buildings, the Pirates’s House and the Sorrel-Weed House, known for its legend and ghostly hauntings.
- Where to sleep: you will discover it in the next post….the beautiful Thunderbird Inn.
