And now we are in the Florida! What a fantastic USA East Coast Road Trip!
The first place you can find is the city of Fernandina Beach: one of the seaside places we have visited during this road trip.
Fernandina Beach is a small place and it does not take too much to visit it: there\’s a main road with some old colonial buildings. The most important are for sure the Lesnesne House, a classic revival style residence built in 1860 and one of the oldest homes,
and the Nassau Historic County Courthouse, an example of Italianate style and the tallest building in Fernandina Beach Historic District.
Another historical building is the Florida\’s First Atlantic to Gulf Railroad Station, built before the Civil War.
The several pirate statues, outside of the shops and of the bars, are the clear symbol of a place frequently attacked and attended by pirates or smugglers: just imagine noisy bars with pirates, frequent fights and liters of rum.
Maybe it happened in this “Florida’s oldest bar”?
After days and days of fast food, we finally went to a \”normal\” restaurant. As our Lonely Planet guides were stating the typical dish of many regions of the Atlantic Coast was crab, we had in the Marina Seafood Restaurant in the main street. The menu, however, looked like the one you could find in some old seaside Italian restaurants of the 80s, with many advertisements around the offer.
We tried the hamburger of crabs and shrimps and it was good, but I would not recommend to have some water: that’s why the people prefer orange juices, coke or other beverages. We spent 17$ per person and it was cheap.
The interior was quite rough.
Finally, before leaving the city, I have to show you this Coca- Cola advertisement in the historical district: I saw something like this in some villages in Africa! 🙂
Travel tips:
- The city of Fernandina Beach is really small and you can visit in a couple of hours
- There are some interesting beaches around;
- The restaurant was discrete and if you want some seafood this is a place where to eat.
- Where to sleep: I recommend the Comfort Suites Oceanview Amelia Island.
