First of all, I parked the car and then started to stroll around the city. But for of all you can admire the landscapes and the first palaces as soon as you access to the old medieval town.

Not far from that, you can see the external facade of the Grand-Ducal Palace, a 16th Century Flemish Renaissance. Unfortunately, the wonderful interior and the stairs can be visited exclusively during the summer. You can find more info about that here

Luxembourg city became a fortress city: it’s time to visit the best part of it, that are the old quarters and fortifications, reason why Luxembourg was inscribed into the Unesco sites list. The main reason was: “The Old City of Luxembourg is located at the confluence of the Alzette and PĂ©trusse Rivers, on a very steep rocky outcrop which is somewhat of a natural fortification that only needed to be completed on the west side. Due to its exceptional strategic position, the City of Luxembourg was one of the largest fortresses of modern Europe which was constantly strengthened and reinforced as it passed successively into the hands of the great European powers.source: Unesco. You can follow the Wenzel Itinerary to discover this beautiful part: in 1-2 hours, depending on your speed, you should be able to visit this nice part. First of all you can have a walk along the fortifications and then later go directly to the entrance of the itinerary.

Now it’s time to access the archaeological crypta and the casemates. The casemates were built to defend the city in case that the other fortifications would have been conquered in case of siege.

How to get there:
  • I  went there by car and it was good since it is far just 250 km from Maastricht (2 hours)
  • By train, since the central station is connected by the network of the high speed trains like TGV or ICE.
  • By plane, by landing in the international airport of Luxembourg, at just 6 km far from the city. The closest “low cost airports” are Frankfurt Hahn, Metz-Nancy and Brussels Charleroi

Travel tips:
  • It takes one day to visit the main attractions.
