The Prague to Bratislava road trip

Now I think it’s time to talk a little bit about an incredible trip I had some years ago: the Prague to Bratislava road trip.

The difference between other road trips consists in the fact that here i did not drive any car, but I travelled via plane, train and bus. It can be similar to the USA East coast road trip since I got to a city, Prague, and left from another one by plane, Bratislava. The main difference is that I travelled by train and bus and not by car.

As usual this is the map designed via Scribble maps website – this way you can see.

Regarding the time, I spent around 4 days in Prague with a friend and then I travelled for other 5 days to reach the final destination, Bratislava. Since at that time I was living in Milan, I travelled to Prague from Milan and from Bratislava to Milan by plane.

On the way to Bratislava, I stopped by three Unesco sites, that are Kutna Hora (1)Litomysl (2) and  Brno (3).

Kutna Hora is a small Bohemian jewel that can be easily reached by train from Prague that has an interesting historical centre with the amazing St. Barbara Cathedral and the spooky Kostnice Ossuary.

Litomysl is famous mostly for the Renaissance castle and has also a nice historical centre where you can stroll and enjoy.

Brno is the former capital of the Moravia and the second largest city of Czechia. On the Petrov hill the medieval Spilberk Castle and the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul dominate the cityscape and the city centre that has also many modern architecture highlights such as the Villa Tugendhat and a vibrant life.

I had the possibility to visit the two capitals and even had the time to visit some great castle ruins close to Bratislava (4). The Slovakia capital is absolutely a place you should visit with a charming historical centre dominated by the castle on top of the hill. I recommend also to take the boat and via the Danube to reach the ruins of the Devin Castle.

I travelled by train and bus and this way i could also see the Czech/Slovak countrysides and landscapes.

To plan this trip I just had to look fot the Unesco sites along the road and then buy a nice guide about Prague: the Italian guide “Weekend a…Praga”, (Ed. Giunti) with 4 great trip itineraries. For English speakers I would recommend the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide: Prague.

Other interesting travel guides I recommend are:
